Berlin, Germany: Marking Earth Day, green search engine Ecosia has achieved a major environmental milestone—planting 250 million trees worldwide—solidifying its position as the world’s largest planter of native trees.
To commemorate the achievement, Ecosia founder Christian Kroll, alongside Germany’s Federal Environment Minister Carsten Schneider, planted a symbolic tree outside the Reichstag Building, home to the German parliament.
A Global Movement Rooted in Local Action
Since its founding in 2009, Ecosia has built an extensive global reforestation network, partnering with 125 organisations and engaging over 200,000 tree planters. The company focuses on planting native species—over 1,600 varieties, including 144 that are endangered or vulnerable—making a significant contribution to biodiversity conservation and ecosystem restoration.
“All of our successes have come from this powerful on-the-ground movement,” said Christian Kroll. “From one click in 2009 to 250 million trees today, our global community has supercharged climate action.”
Beyond Tree Planting: Investing in Long-Term Impact
Ecosia has invested more than €100 million into climate initiatives, including €1 million in renewable energy projects. Its approach goes beyond simple reforestation, supporting community-based systems where trees provide economic value—such as fruit and nut production—ensuring long-term sustainability.
However, the company also emphasizes that many critical restoration efforts, including biodiversity hotspots and degraded lands, do not offer immediate financial returns. These projects are often overlooked by traditional investors despite their importance for environmental resilience.
Ecosia’s model fills this gap by prioritizing ecological and social impact over profit, supporting projects that might otherwise remain unfunded.
A Purpose-Driven Company Structure
In 2018, Ecosia transferred its ownership to the Purpose Foundation, ensuring that the company can never be sold or used for private profit. All revenues are reinvested into environmental initiatives, making the planet its only beneficiary.
Uniquely, Ecosia employs a dedicated “Tree Team” of forestry experts, economists, and social scientists. It is also the only company to appoint a Chief Tree Planting Officer (CTPO), currently held by Pieter van Midwoud, who oversees long-term project monitoring and sustainability.
“We care about our trees long term, not just for short-term results,” said van Midwoud. “Our monitoring programmes ensure that restoration projects continue to deliver meaningful impact over time.”
Road to One Billion Trees
Looking ahead, Ecosia aims to significantly expand its impact by shifting towards holistic landscape restoration. This includes integrating tree planting with water management, sustainable agriculture, and community development.
The company is also set to collaborate with organizations such as Commonland to enhance ecosystem resilience through agroforestry and community-driven restoration models.
By aligning environmental goals with local needs, Ecosia is positioning itself not just as a reforestation leader, but as a key driver of global ecological restoration—on its journey toward planting one billion trees.
